I dust off FG for a spin through campaign mode now an dthen, and I got to thinking: how many different unit types can you viably use as the 'core' of your army? I don't mean making 75% of your army fliers or whatnot.. just the units that you use to do the bulk of the work. Heavy Infantry and Heavy Cav seem to be the popular choices; I've heard of people relying on Sky Hunters and had a few half-finished campaigns of that sort which went pretty well. But what about beyond that? I've had some surprisingly great Siege Engine-oriented campaigns before (technically it was more of a 'combined arms' approach, but when you have twice as many siege engines as you have units screening them I think it's safe to say that your army favors artillery a little). Skirmisher or Skirmisher/LI I think might be doable (and would probably be highly successful early on, until your upgrades run out of steam). I think it's reasonably safe to write off Spellcasters, but has anyone ever had much success with mass Archer or Bombardier armies? Not really sure if either could be made to work--I love archers for support fire effects, but even clusters of archers with multiplied support fire get demolished. And as for bombardiers, well.. perhaps a better question would be if anyone has ever gotten use out of bombardiers except as a token gesture to appease the computer's 'balanced army' requirement. Used en masse you could have some fun with 'carpet bombing' techniques, but the defending your large bomber force without having to buy an even larger interceptor force would be problematic (in the same sense that trying to bail out a sinking aircraft carrier with a bucket is problematic). Any thoughts on this?![](/uploads/1/2/5/7/125719846/558406833.jpg)
